Ticks in the City: How to Stay Safe?

Spring and summer are our favorite seasons for long walks and outdoor fun with our four-legged companions. But who could ruin the fun? Ticks.
Even in the heart of the city, we need to stay alert. These tiny intruders are often hiding in grassy patches between buildings, our favorite neighborhood park, in public gardens and playgrounds, along trails with tall grass and low shrubs — and often even by the sidewalks.

Ticks prefer shady and moist environments and are most active between April and October.

What are the risks?

A tick bite can lead to serious diseases such as:

  • Lyme disease

  • Babesiosis

  • Anaplasmosis

Even though it might seem that the risk is lower in urban parks, the reality is that many animals pass through these areas, helping ticks spread quickly.

During their active season, it’s important to check your pet daily, especially if they have thick fur that can easily hide an unwanted guest. If you notice that your dog seems lethargic, has a fever, or loses appetite — don’t waste time, consult your veterinarian immediately. In such cases, fast action is critical.

How to protect your pets?

🛡️ Preventive protection

The best prevention is the regular use of anti-parasitic products such as collars, spot-on treatments, or chewable tablets.

👀 Check your dog after every walk

Even a short walk around the block can result in a tick. Check carefully:

  • Around the ears

  • Neck and under the armpits

  • Between the toes

  • Around the belly and tail

🚫 Avoid tall grass

Whenever possible, stick to marked paths and avoid tall grass and dense bushes.

What to do if you find a tick?

  1. Stay calm — If you haven’t faced this situation before, contact a veterinarian you trust. They can advise you on the best way to proceed.

  2. Act quickly — Some owners underestimate the risks of a tick bite. Unfortunately, there are many cases where the animal’s condition becomes irreversible.

  3. Keep observing your pet after removal — Monitor their behavior closely in the following days. And don’t forget to give them plenty of cuddles!
